Cycling Performance

Over the past 1.5 years I have allowed myself to slip. After a knee injury in February, I began my comeback at the beginning of June on the bike.
Now my goal is to return to my old form, as well as improve athletic performance, especially in cycling. I don't care about my body image, loss, or gain; my goal is purely performance.
I have run into a problem. This was bothering me when I was doing a bit of cycling last summer as well. My calves are limiting my performance. They start to sieze up after a bit of hard biking, forcing me to give up early. If I don't stop, I know I will get a horrible cramp in my calf.
So here is what I need to do:
1. condition my calves so I can focus on pushing my quads on the hills and my heart on the flats
2. bring my body to a level of conditioning such that I can do focused athletic training (not limited to cycling) at will without fear of injury or muscle issues.

First thing you have to do is strech your calfs everyday, 4 times each side 30 seconds per side, find something that planks up diagonally that you can plant your foot on to stretch. Usually feels better with a Shoe, due to the support.
Also your key exercise would be Dumbbell Squat to Calf Raise. 15 Pounds in each hand 20 reps 5 sets would be sufficient.
